Little Whispers, Tal Jalandoni

First Reading
EPH 2:19-22

Brothers and sisters:
You are no longer strangers and sojourners,
but you are fellow citizens with the holy ones
and members of the household of God,
built upon the foundation of the Apostles and prophets,
with Christ Jesus himself as the capstone.
Through him the whole structure is held together
and grows into a temple sacred in the Lord;
in him you also are being built together
into a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.

Responsorial Psalm
PS 19:2-3, 4-5
R. (5a) Their message goes out through all the earth.

The heavens declare the glory of God,
and the firmament proclaims his handiwork.
Day pours out the word to day,
and night to night imparts knowledge.
R. Their message goes out through all the earth.
Not a word nor a discourse
whose voice is not heard;
Through all the earth their voice resounds,
and to the ends of the world, their message.
R. Their message goes out through all the earth.

LK 6:12-16

Jesus went up to the mountain to pray,
and he spent the night in prayer to God.
When day came, he called his disciples to himself,
and from them he chose Twelve, whom he also named Apostles:
Simon, whom he named Peter, and his brother Andrew,
James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew,
Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus,
Simon who was called a Zealot,
and Judas the son of James,
and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

“in him you also are being built together into a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.”(Ephesians 2:22)

I have this friend who likes making surprises for her family and friends, especially on their birthdays. After a while she was sad to notice that she was always the surprise giver, never the recipient. One time she decided that she will tell her family and friends that she wants a surprise for her birthday. She plainly said it and she got the surprise!

She told me this story when i was confiding to her how alone i felt when my loved ones failed to accept me, comfort me and support me when I needed them to. She told me that at first, she wanted a surprise only if it came from her family and friends’ initiative because she thought that was the only way to make it meaningful. But then she realized that sometimes we need to lower our pride and not be too hard on the people who constantly want to show us support. Sometimes we need to be vulnerable enough to let them know how we feel, what we need. We’re not only doing ourselves a favor but doing them a greater favor by helping them know how to love us better. Just because they love us, doesn’t mean they always know how to. And just because they don’t always know how to love, doesn’t mean they don’t love us. Equally true roles reversed. Wouldn’t you want to know how you could treat those dear to you better?

For me, though there were times I opened up only to be disappointed, there were also times that opening up my life to others was what I needed to be consoled, to be healed, to move on, including this time I shared with my friend. For God meant us to be together. Today, God didn’t say “I’m building you individually.” Rather He said, “You are being built together.”

What if God’s way of being there for us is through this gift of companionship? Then to shut other people out is also to shut God out. Sayang.

Come, Friend. Let’s trust God’s way. Let’s let God be God- the God of healing, the God of relationships, the God of love. Let Him surprise you. 🙂

Lord, heal my hurts that hinder me from being open to love. Help me include myself in the “together” that you intended to build. Amen.
